Orissa youth Anwesh Upadhyaya finished a creditable sixth, securing 7.5 points in the 2nd Tata All-India Open Chess Tournament at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand today. In the 10-round tournament, Bhubaneswar lad Anwesh won six games, drew three and suffered one defeat. In the last round, he held Grandmaster Neelotpal Das (ONGC) to a draw. Das (8.5 points), however, emerged champion, edging out runner-up Vikramaditya Kamble (Railway), via Buchholz tie-break rule.
Among 15 other Orissa players in the fray, Debasis Chakrabarti 27th and Utkal Ranjan Sahoo finished 27th and 30th with 6.5 points each, followed by Mohammad Ashraf (5.5, 50th), Rakesh Kumar Nayak (5.5, 54th), Sunyasakta Satpathy (5.5, 56th), Gobardhan Behera (5.5, 65th), Smaraki Mohanty (5.5, 73rd), G C Mohapatra (5, 77th), K L Bhoi (5, 82nd), P K Bihari (5, 95th), Rakesh Kumar Jena (4.5, 109th), Sradhanjali Jena (4, 114th), P K Chhualsingh (4, 116th), Prasanna Kumar Nayak (4, 120th) and Soumya Ranjan Das (3, 147th).
